Jarmila Pavlíčková

(1929 – 2007)

Academic painter Jarmila Pavlíčková was born on 14 July 1929 in Budatín near Žilina. She was a graphic artist, illustrator, publicist, monumentalist and painter.

She became a recognised artist not only in Slovakia but also on the international art scene. The foundation of her work consists of graphic pieces in which she addressed themes of humanism, motifs of anti-fascism and historicising scenes. Her graphic cycles were highly regarded and received awards within the women’s and international peace movement, including abroad. She also enriched the field of book illustration for children and young people. The thematic scope of her works is further broadened by captivating portrait studies, and her collections of monumental-decorative works intended for architecture are also well known. In 1983 she was awarded the title of Merited Artist. During the 1970s and 1980s she served as chairwoman of the Union of Slovak Fine Artists in Bratislava.

In Prievidza, two of her sgrafitos can be found on Sama Chalupku Street: the entrance sign of a ram above entrance no. 13 and a crayfish above entrance no. 15.

She died on 6 November 2007 in Bratislava.
