NOVÉ SÍDLISKO

Emília Jakubisová

(1951- )

She was born on 9 December 1951 in Levice. She studied at the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Bratislava, in the graphics department under academic painter Gabriel Štrba (1967–1971), and at DAMU — the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (1973–1977), in the free painting studio (Assoc. Prof. O. Smutný) and the department of theatre puppet scenography (V. Kábrt). She completed study residencies in Bulgaria, Sweden and Denmark.

She lives and works in Bojnice.

The work of Mimi Jakubisová is extraordinarily diverse. She is a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, scenographer and designer — she devotes herself to free and chamber painting on canvas and wood, graphics, sculpture, art tapestry, as well as theatrical stage and costume design. She occasionally works in directing and writes poetry. She is able to express her vision of the world and her feelings through theatrical, visual and literary means. She worked at the JZ Theatre in Prešov (collaborating with directors such as Jaro Rihák, Edo Gürtler and Maroš Geišberg), at the Puppet Theatre in Nitra, and also collaborated with other theatres at home and abroad as a costume and set designer. In Prievidza she founded the puppet ensemble RUKA, for which she wrote texts, created puppets, costumes, sets and directed. She also collaborated with director P. S. Butko and the theatre Shanti. She created a collection of wax figures of historical personalities for the exhibitions at Bojnice Castle.

She is the author of dozens of monumental compositions combining painting and sculpture. In collaboration with architects, she used them to decorate the interiors of various buildings, including the foyer of the JGT Theatre in Zvolen, the House of Culture in Prievidza, the House of Culture in Necpaly, the wedding hall, the entrance to the municipal office and the funeral home in Lehota pod Vtáčnikom, the funeral home in Lazany, the polyclinic in Nováky, the Lysec spa house at the Bojnice Spa, and she painted the main altar painting in the Chapel at the Bojnice Spa, among many others.

In her painting, she gradually moved from portraits and figures into the abstract world, using thick paints whose impasto quality creates a distinctive relief-like texture in her works. In several series she used ochre-brown tones on a grey and white ground; in others she employs vivid, expressive, “Fauvist” colouring.

She illustrated several publications, including Eva Siegelová’s books About the Mysterious Bojnice Ghost, legends and stories from Bojnice, About the Mysterious Bird of Happiness, and Legends and Stories about Prievidza. She created graphic designs for posters and bulletins for various cultural events.

Mimi Jakubisová has presented her chamber work at dozens of solo exhibitions in various cities across Slovakia and also in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. She actively contributes to the development of visual culture in the Upper Nitra region: she taught at the Primary Art School in Prievidza, is a member of the Slovak Artists’ Society based in Bratislava, and is a co-organiser of painting symposia such as the Gesture and Emotion symposium in Bojnice (since 2009) and the International Painting Symposium Bojnice 2023.
